Due to a flooding event, the existing W-Beam guardrail was washed away leaving significant damage to the shoulder of this already narrow roadway. Providing assistance to FKG, a barrier design including Brifen Wire Rope, slope stabilization and cross road overturn moment elimination, a design was completed which allowed the installation of the wire rope to be conducted to accommodate, not only the 100km/h speed environment, but also any future flooding events. The structural design of a concrete H beam was included to remove any potential overturn of the beam during an impact.
CML Civil became involved with this project when contacted by Gold Coast City Council to undertake the design and certification of the barrier protection of the approved lighting display for the M1 within Yatala. The original concept for site protection was to include concrete barriers for the length of the installation. CML Civil undertook a review of the concept design and utilising the DTMR standards and requirements for the roadway, produced a number of options that would supply the required site protection and also reduce the project costs considerably.
CML Civil became involved with this project when contacted by ProBuild to undertake a unique site protection for a deep excavation – 23m below road level. The barrier installation was limited in offset from the roadway while simultaneously having limited deflection capacity behind. CML Civil normalised the deflection requirements of the chosen barrier for use within the existing road environment to arrive at a design that was suitable for installation within the top of the capping beam of the excavation structural walls.
